Casey Trust to Assist Mental Health Recovery of Affected Former Participants in Casey City Church
Rationale
Casey City Church asked external pastors Revs. Graeme Cann, Peter McHugh, Allan Meyer, Jeremy Rensford and Johnny Scroggins to serve as temporary elders. They were to examine the complaint that many persons who had left the church had experienced emotional, psychological and spiritual harm, and to examine an attempt to respond. The elders later invited Rev Judith Wilkie to join them in an Advisory Panel facilitating this process. The Panel concluded that harm of this nature did occur, and agreed to the request of Pastor Kevin Manning for a trust fund to be established from the funds of Casey City Church in order to financially assist such persons to receive mental health care. The Casey Trust Fund was legally established in Jan 2024 and will become operative once it is funded. Its duration will be for up to three years, with finite funding that either will run out in accomplishing its purpose or finally will be donated to relevant charity.
Purpose of Trust
The Trust is established to support psychological and spiritual recovery with the help of suitably qualified practitioners. The goal is to assist as many as possible of the affected persons to move in the direction of health, functional living and the ability to relate positively to God and to a Christian community. The assumption is that healing and transformation is part of a lifetime process led by God, completed in glory, and involving many personal choices and types of relationships. The hope is that those who have experienced damage can be reset by love in a direction that will be life-giving. The professional world of mental health care includes many types of practitioners. The person who desires help is free to choose the helper desired, such as for example a psychologist, counsellor, marriage and family therapist, mental health social worker, spiritual director or chaplain. In order to qualify for fund assistance, the practitioner must be accredited by a recognised body in their area of practice and must do more therapeutic work than prescribe medications or life coaching. The Trust does not address every aspect of life recovery, such as lost wages or physical medical costs.
Procedures for Assistance
If you believe you are eligible for assistance and wish to apply, complete the designated application. Applications will be verified by long-term former pastors and elders of Casey City Church (Kevin and Jenni Manning and Karen and Stuart Alsop). The Counselling Coordinator of the Trust will then interview those who meet the criteria.
If the applicant is already under the care of a qualified practitioner for their needs, they are encouraged to continue with that professional, and their application for financial assistance can begin from the establishment date of the trust. For those who have not yet identified a suitable helper, the trust’s counselling coordinator will offer referral information to aid in the search. Upon approval of an application, funds will be disbursed after each verified professional session.
Verification will be facilitated through the submission of a professional invoice from the practitioner or a receipt for services paid by the recipient. These documents should be forwarded to the financial manager of the Trust. The funds may cover the entire session, be applicable after deducting the Medicare (or Workcover) rebate, or have other limitations such as session costs or a specified number of sessions.
